A Selkie is a Celtic water spirit that disguises itself as seal when swimming in the ocean. They are known as the good mer-people of the sea, the classic fish-based verity, the Slendermen, their evil equivalent. Selkies are known to shed their seal skins to seek human lovers on dry land and start a half-human, half-fairy family before returning to the sea. I wanted to do something more serial in my Selkie illustration, so I depicted a female Selkie coming out of a limp seal's mouth, rather than have the seal skin be more of an article of clothing like in most depictions.
